Annual Programs, Events, and Activities

Texas Independence Day Celebration

Every year around the world, thousands of "Texans" get together to honor Texas Independence Day as a tribute to the great University of Texas. This is our major scholarship fundraiser of the year. It honors a distinguished local alumni and includes dinner, and great silent and live auctions! Planning starts early and there is a lot to be done. You can assist in many ways as we need a great number of volunteers. This event funds our scholarships for the coming year.

"A Night in Austin" (Fall Party)

We celebrate with a dinner, dance and concert. Past entertainers have included Jerry Jeff Walker, the Dixie Chicks, Gary P. Nunn, Asleep at the Wheel, Pat Green and Cory Morrow.

Grocery Program

Randalls, Kroger, Rice and others have frequency reward programs. This is an easy way to support the chapter. To date, we have collected approximately $10,000 from this program. At Randalls, use #5673 and at Kroger, use the card included.

Eeyore's Fun Run

This FUN race is held annually in conjunction with the UT Health Science Center. There is something for everyone: kids, walkers, and runners. There are many ways to volunteer beforehand and on the day of the event.

Texas Exes Astros Night

Meet up with hundreds of other UT alumni and the UTHSC and enjoy the start of baseball and the boys of summer. The Texas Exes Houston Chapter receives scholarship money for each ticket sold, which makes it all the more worthwhile.

Scholarship Committee

The scholarship committee plays an integral role in the recruitment and selection process of our scholarship recipients. Its duty is to select the brightest and most deserving students from a pool of applicants. Applications are distributed to all high schools in the Houston area to allow every student wishing to attend UT to be considered for our scholarships. The selection process begins with distributing applications to area schools and reviewing the applications and selecting thirty applicants for the interviews. Twenty-six (26) new scholarships were awarded for the 2005-2006 school year. This committee is also in charge of recognizing nominees of the Texas Exes awards to outstanding teachers from the Houston area.. The nominees are nominated by high school principals to the Texas Exes in Austin to receive an award at the Teaching Excellence Banquet held in Austin. Our chapter has endowed a scholarship to support the event and hopefully will always have a recipient from the Houston area.

Young Alumni Happy Hour

These happy hours and held on the second Thursday of each month at various bars and restaurants. Happy Hours provide a great way to network, make new friends, and recruit new members.

Game Day Charters

We have buses that transport fans to Austin for home games and special flights that take Longhorns to Dallas for the OU game, and some other away games. These trips are a bargain and a great way to meet new Exes. A new volunteer is needed to help transport drinks to the bus and-in return, the chapter will pay for his/her way to the game.

Texas Exes Business Network (TEBN)

The purpose of the TEBN is to unite, inform and network The University of Texas alumni for the purpose of greater success in business. The TEBN provides a great networking and mentoring opportunity. An annual golf tournament is held with the proceeds to continue to fund book scholarships.

Past Presidents Luncheon

The purpose of this series is to promote the essential links between UT-Austin and the Houston community. Typically held at the River Oaks Country Club, this event is an opportunity for our chapter’s Past Presidents and current board members to meet, eat lunch, and hear the latest from dynamic guest speakers.

Game Watching Parties

With athletics in the hearts of most "orange bloods," we provide a fun venue for Exes to gather and cheer on the Horns. Rules: COME EARLY, BE LOUD, STAY LATE AND WEAR ORANGE!!! It's the next best thing to being there!

UT Advocates for Higher Education

The purpose of this committee is to be prepared when a legislative issue arises concerning higher education. The Association has hired a full-time staff member to work directly with the chairman of this committee.

Student Send-Off

This event began in 2002.We host UT and President Faulkner in Houston to meet with the Houston area entering freshman at UT-Austin. The goal is to give them the idea that they are not entering such a large University, but instead, a comfortable place to receive a wonderful education.

Local Involvement Committee

Started in 2001-2002, this committee is designed to attract interested supporters of UT to become involved in the chapter in such a way that they do not feel intimated. An open house will be held three times a year, presently at Central Market, to show what the chapter is about and gain new volunteers to have a pool to pull from for the different events. In the first year, the committee brought in over more than new volunteers.
